Melange Herbs de Provence
Why do you think the French are known for their cooking? It's the subtle little things. These pretty plastic-lined cotton bags of aromatic herbs, including marjorie, basil, rosemary, and thyme, are all you need for the savory flavor of the South of France.
Here's our favorite way to roast chicken: first, rub the chicken all over with olive oil and a handful of Melange Herbes de Provence, then cook the chicken bosom side down at 375º till golden brown. Nothing's more simple -- or delicious.
The plastic lining keeps the herbs fresh a long time and the cotton bag can be used to hold coins, keys, marbles -- whatever -- when you finish the herbs.
But that won't be for awhile. A little goes a long way -- these herbs are potent -- so one bag may last you a whole year.
Unless more people start dropping in at dinnertime.
